Alamo Crossing

Alamo Crossing is a ghost town in Mohave County, Arizona, with a history stretching back to the late 1890s, when it took shape as a camp serving mining prospectors working the manganese-rich Artillery Mountains. At the time it was founded, Arizona was still a territory, and Alamo Crossing held the distinction of being the only town in the surrounding area.

The town's post office shut down for good after 1918, yet the settlement itself was never simply abandoned outright. Its original founders returned periodically and remained connected to the place through at least the mid-1950s. That long, intermittent occupation came to a definitive end in 1968, when the town was deliberately flooded to form Alamo Lake.

Visitors today will find no surface remains of the original town — it lies beneath the waters of Alamo Lake. The site is worth knowing about for the historical context it lends to the lake and surrounding area, and photography of the landscape makes for a compelling way to engage with what once existed here.
